Family Business

Star Creek Land Stewards originated from the planned grazing efforts at Star Creek Ranch, in the hills of Santa Cruz and San Benito counties. With time these efforts have evolved into a competitive and professional grazing outfit, taking what was learned at the ranch out into the greater lands of California.

Now operated by Andrée (Talbott) Soares of Los Banos, California, alongside her daughter, Project Manager Bianca Soares, and Operations Manager Emilio Huarte. Andrée’s family's Basque heritage legacy working within the Sheep Industry persists as Star Creek Land Stewards Inc. grazes new territories. Working with goats alongside sheep to perform specialized grazing programs– a new kind of enterprise for the Sheep and Goat Industry providing much needed services in land stewardship and fire hazard reduction.

In the beginning, a herd of Spanish x Boer goats were selected to be used in a managed grazing operation to decrease brush density, increase the diversity of native perennial grasses and prepare the soil for forest restoration. Sheep were introduced shortly after the herd of goats was established and provided greater flexibility in grassland restoration.

Star Creek Land Stewards Inc. is now performing land stewardship projects throughout Northern California spanning into the Bay Area, Sacramento, Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, San Mateo, Marin, Placer, Monterey, Alameda and Contra Costa Counties and beyond.
